ZEROING THE SCOPES ON YOUR USED HUNTING RIFLES

Long gone are the days when hunters relied on iron sights to bag their prey, but with invention comes new procedures, and zeroing the scopes of your new and used hunting rifles may be one of the most important things that you do this hunting season. Modern optical scopes give your shots a degree of accuracy that our forefathers could only dream of, especially at long ranges. However, even the best scope on the market is useless if it’s not correctly aligned with the bore, so here’s a guide to help you with zeroing the scopes on your hunting rifles.

  1. Use bore sighting to get on the paper.  If your weapon is a bolt-action, then simply remove the bolt to sight the target.  If it’s a pump or semi-auto, then you’ll need a collimator.  The details of how to bore-sight are beyond the range of this article, but there are many videos on YouTube and other parts of the Internet that will walk your through the process.  The crucial thing to remember is that bore sighting will not give you the precise accuracy you need by itself.  Use it to get your shots close enough that they actually hit the target.  Then, use the following steps to fine-tune the scope.
  2. Use sandbags to support your rifle when scoping in at the range.  Then fire your first shot from 25 yards away.  This will put your scope in line to sight about 2.5” high at 100 yards, which is the sweet spot for most modern high-powered rifle calibers.
  3. Align the crosshairs so that they’re on the spot where the bullet went through.  The sights are now in line with the bore.
  4. Aim for the bull’s-eye and take a second shot.  This time it should be pretty much dead center.  Sometimes a third shot is needed.
  5. Repeat the process at 100 yards.  Then, do it once more for the longest distance shot you anticipate making.  It’s amazing how a perfect 100-yard shot opens up at 300 yards.

Your scope is now zeroed in.  Enjoy the season!
