WHAT YOU’RE GETTING WITH USED TAURUS REVOLVERS: A LOOK AT THE COMPANY
If you’re interested in used Taurus revolvers, then you’ve probably got an eye for rugged, dependable firearms at an excellent price point. Once derided for being “Saturday night specials,” Taurus has built a 30-year+ reputation for selling well-built, innovative guns at prices that just about anyone can afford. Here’s a look at the company and its history.
Taurus History
Taurus is a Brazil-based company with headquarters in the coastal city of Sao Paulo. Brazil is a rising economic force in the world, with a highly literate population, a well-developed infrastructure, and a number of world-class technical schools and corporations. The country enjoys good relations with the United States and has cooperated with international anti-terrorism and law enforcement efforts.
Taurus started manufacturing weapons in 1941. Its first model was a revolver, the 38101SO. In the late 60s, the company began exporting its products to the United States. At the time, Taurus was not a well-regarded brand. However, this began to change in the 1970s, when the parent company of Smith & Wesson purchased a controlling share in Taurus as well. Smith & Wesson and Taurus began to share design and manufacturing technology, which led to a significant upgrade in the brand’s quality.
This move toward improved craftsmanship and quality accelerated in 1980 when Taurus purchased a Beretta-owned production facility located in Sao Paulo. The revered Italian manufacturer won a contract to build weapons for the Brazilian military in 1974 and built a Brazilian plant to fulfill the contract. When the order was completed six years later, Beretta sold the cutting-edge facility “lock, stock, and barrel” to Taurus. The deal included Beretta’s world-class tooling, design and production equipment, and, most important, the location’s highly educated and well-trained workforce.
In 1984, the company created a subsidiary called Taurus International Manufacturing Incorporated. Also known as Taurus USA, this firm handles the exportation of the company’s firearms and other products to the United States.
1984 was a significant year for the firm in other ways. It marked the first time that it began backing its products with its now-famous lifetime guarantee. Any weapon made by the company during or since 1984 is fully guaranteed against defects. This warranty is included at no charge.
This kind of guarantee was unprecedented at the time, and it marked Taurus’ transformation into a first-class company with products that could hold their own in the world market. Ten years later, Taurus again made headlines when it received the ISO 9001 designation from the International Organization for Standardization for excellence in manufacturing and quality control.
In 1997, Taurus purchased the right to build and sell Rossi-brand revolvers. The company currently manufactures three .38 Special models and four .357 models under the Rossi name. These models are all manufactured in Brazil.
Currently, Taurus is well-known as a company that builds quality products that are worth their cost and more. Their current line includes both steel and polymer-frame pistols, revolvers, and the CTG29 9mm carbine. The Millennium pistol line is especially popular with American shooters.
