As the vast majority of holsters are purchased with concealed carry in mind, one of the inevitable questions that comes up is whether to choose a model designed for inside waist band (IWB) or outside waist band (OWB) carry. While this is ultimately up to the individual, here are some factors to consider when deciding.

1. IWB carry offers the ultimate in concealment. A handgun set snugly inside your waistband is highly likely to remain undetected until and unless your present it. This is especially true if you’re willing to sacrifice size and/or stopping power in exchange for discretion.

2. IWB carry has a drawback, however. In most cases, it can be somewhat uncomfortable. This will vary somewhat depending on the carrier’s build, clothing style, size of the weapon, type of holster, etc. In most cases, however, there’s inevitably some degree of discomfort.

3. IWB usually means wearing a larger pants size than normal, to accommodate the girth added by the weapon. This might be a problem for those who feel their waistline is already too large.

4. OWB is the hands-down winner when it comes to comfort. However, this benefit is offset by the need to wear exterior clothing to hide the weapon. This isn’t so much a concern during winter. However, in the hot summer months, an extra layer of clothing is not only uncomfortable, it can signal to everyone around you that you’re carrying a gun.

5. There are alternatives to using traditional holsters. CCW-friendly purses, bags, and pants are just a few of the options available. A quick search of the Internet will reveal many more.
