TIPS FOR BUYING USED HUNTING RIFLES | DURY’S GUN SHOP

As of this writing, the economy is slowly recovering from a worldwide recession.  While things are looking better, money is still tight for many people.  One way to still add to your firearms collection, however, is to consider buying used hunting rifles.  When chosen properly, a pre-owned weapon can offer the same reliability and performance as a new one, at a fraction of the cost.

Here are some tips for telling a good buy from a lemon:

1. First, look the weapon over end to end.  Note any obvious damage. Is the stock on tight?  Does it have any cracks?  What you’re trying to do at this point is determine whether the weapon was abused or neglected by the previous owner.

2. Know the difference between ordinary wear and real trouble signs. For example, faded bluing on or under the receiver merely indicates that is was held at those points in the past.  Human perspiration causes the finish to wear over time without affecting performance.  On the other hand, rust spots are a major warning sign.  If the weapon was allowed to rust outside, chances are there is rust or even pitting in the barrel or inner workings.  Such a gun will be nothing but trouble for you.

3. Look at the screws’ slots for the action and the scope mount.  If they look chewed up, be wary.  This rifle may have been modified in some way, and not by a competent gunsmith.

4. Check the action.  Bolts should slide smoothly.  Lever actions shouldn’t have any sticking points.  If you notice any problems, the rifle should be passed on.

5. Ask the seller if you can dry-fire the weapon; doing so once will not harm it.  If he or she gives you permission, test the safety at this point.  The striker absolutely must not fall.

If you notice anything that makes you uneasy, either try for a lower price or just pass the rifle up.  There are plenty of good used hunting rifles out there, so you don’t have to settle for a weapon in poor condition.  Good luck in your search.
